WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?
Homeopathy is a highly systematic method of powerfully stimulating the body’s vital force to cure illness. It is a branch of medicine which cures based on similarity to the whole health condition of the patient. Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like with like’, that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. Homeopathic medicines are used in ultra high dilution, which makes them non-toxic. Homeopathy not only addresses the health of the whole person, but can succeed in treating many chronic conditions regarded as incurable by conventional medicine.
The principle of treating “like with like” dates back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine (460-377BC) but in its present form, homeopathy has been successfully used worldwide for more than 200 years.
It was discovered by a German Medical Doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who, was shocked by the harsh medical practices of the day (which included blood-letting, purging and the use of poisons such as arsenic), looked for a way to reduce the damaging side effects associated with medical treatment.
He began experimenting on himself and a group of healthy volunteers, giving smaller and smaller medicinal doses and found that as well as reducing toxicity, the medicines actually appeared to be more effective the lower the dose. He also observed that symptoms caused by toxic ‘medicines’ such as mercury, were similar to those of the diseases they were being used to treat e.g. syphilis, which lead to the principle he described as ‘like cures like’.
Hahnemann claimed and showed that:
- A medical cure is brought about in accordance with certain laws of healing that are in nature.
- Nobody can cure outside the laws.
- There are no diseases as such, but only diseased individuals.
- An illness is always dynamic by nature, so the remedy too must therefore be in a dynamic state if it is to cure.
- The patient needs only one particular remedy and no other at any given stage of the illness.
- Unless a certain remedy is found, he or she is not cured but at best the condition is only temporarily relieved.
Once the body/ mind/ emotion/ spirit is in balance, life improves… patients feel happier, aches pains and disease disappear, stress is removed, the mind is clearer and patients are able to understand the concept that it is necessary to take responsibility for himself.
WHAT CAN IT TREAT?
Being a holistic system of medicine homeopathy has the potential to effectively treat any disease, whether acute or long standing chronic diseases. When necessary it can work together with traditional medical treatment, or can be used to alleviate the side effects of orthodox drug therapies.
Homeopathy will not just drive away the symptoms but will help you to deal with the cause of your illness and regain good health. Homeopaths treat physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual illnesses, viewing all these levels as being intimately connected since they are all aspects of the patient’s suffering.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?
Homeopathic remedies, this is the name we give our medicines, have only a minute amount of the active ingredient and as such are very gentle and non-addictive. There are over 3000 remedies which come from many different sources, including plants, mineral, metals and some poisons all of which have been used medicinally for generations. A sophisticated process of dilution and succession (shaking vigorously) is used to develop the healing properties inherent in these substances.
Based on the information you give in the consultation, the homeopath selects and provides you with a remedy, often in the form of a tablet or tablet, or you may be given a liquid remedy with instructions. This remedy is prescribed for the individual patient, not merely for his or her disease but for the person’s whole state.
After taking the remedy you may notice some changes. Some patients experience a period of exceptional well-being and optimism. Sometimes, your symptoms appear to get worse for a short time. This is a good sign that the remedy is taking effect.
Sometimes a cold, rash or some form of discharge may appear as a “spring cleaning” effect, which means your system is going through a cleaning stage. Similarly, old symptoms can reappear, usually for a short period. These symptoms will pass, and if possible should not be suppressed as they are a very important part of the healing process.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL?
A TYPICAL SESSION – WHAT WILL THE HOMEOPATH NEED TO KNOW
Homeopathy recognizes that it is the patient who needs treatment not the disease, so to find the right remedy the homeopath needs to know all about you. A detailed understanding of who you are, along with any complaints and how you experience them, is needed to assess your case correctly. So anything you can say that is typical of who you are and how you experience the world will help the process. Finding out about your general energy level, your past medical history and the way you live are also important. The homeopath needs to know about any medicine that has been prescribed for you and by your doctor, or that you take regularly.
At the follow up appointment the homeopath will check through the points that were discussed at the initial consultation. This process helps the homeopath to monitor all the symptoms and allows him/her to make an assessment as to the patients progress. At this stage the homeopath will either wait, issue a repeat prescription or may change the prescription. This appointment is extremely important as each patient’s response to any remedy is completely unique to them and indicates how future treatment will progress with regard to remedies and dosage.
